Tips For Discipline For Toddlers
Parents find discipline for toddlers very difficult because they have to show them they love them and still be strict while doing it. Therefore, parents need to create the rules in a way that following them does not demand too much from the young toddler who does not understand them. Parents will set certain limits and most toddlers will push their way to see just how much they can get away with. Parents should therefore be very careful to ensure that they do not stray from the rules and follow the toddler. However, they should be very strict yet loving when doing this and realize that the toddler will fuss when they cannot do what they want. It is important to understand a toddler before implementing a form of disciplinary measure in order for it to work. Toddlers will feel safe and secure around their parents and will therefore let them set their limits for what they can or cannot do.
Because it is not too demanding, time out is a very common form of discipline. When a toddler is made to sit in a corner for a few minutes without doing anything, they feel very bad and do not want to repeat it. To calculate how long a toddler should sit alone, take a minute for every year they have in age. Parents should also learn to ignore temper tantrums so that toddlers understand that they cannot get their way by crying and shouting. Parents should set limits and show consistency with them and this can be used as another disciplinary measure for toddlers. In addition, parents should create a positive environment where the toddler is praised for doing good things and not just being reprimanded.
It is important to reinforce discipline both when at home and when not in the house. This means that if a toddler misbehaves when they are outside, they should be punished there and not wait until they get home later. This is because they will be punished and they may not even remember why they are being punished and will not connect it to their actions. They should also be punished away from other people to avoid embarrassing them and lowering their self esteem. Discipline for toddlers is very important because it helps form the correct characters that a toddler will take up in future and therefore sets a good foundation.
